Nail-biting — known clinically as onychophagia — is more than a bad habit. It’s a coping mechanism. Many people unconsciously turn to it when experiencing stress, anxiety, or mental overload, because it provides a momentary sense of control or relief. When stress activates the body’s “fight-or-flight” response, we often seek small, repetitive behaviors that help discharge nervous energy — tapping fingers, fidgeting, or biting nails.
